LEE AND JACKSON DAY, 17 JANUARY 1998

BEEF EATER'S RESTAURANT, PHOENIX, ARIZONA

On January 17, 1998 the Colonel Sherod Hunter Camp 1525 hosted its annual birthday celebration in honour of the South's two greatest military heroes, General Robert E. Lee and Lt. General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson.   This was the largest-attended such event in the history of the SCV in Arizona up to that time, with 58 people in attendance.  In part this was due to the main highlight of the event, which was the presentation of a REAL DAUGHTER medal and certificate to Mrs. Effie Turner of Casa Grande, Arizona, who is the daughter of Private Thomas Wood Machen, Company G, 31st Alabama Infantry.  Another highlight was the Lee and Jackson Trivia contest, which for that year had as its top two prizes commemorative silver coins of Generals Lee and Jackson, and as third prize, a copy of Professor James I. Robertson's definitive biography, STONEWALL JACKSON: THE MAN, THE SOLDIER, THE LEGEND.   Everyone had a splendid time, and the event was a great success.

Arizona Division officers seated at the table to either side are (left to right) Ed Porter of Camp 1525, Peter Polley of the Confederate Secret Service Camp 1710, Larry Billar of Camp 1525, Ray Ganey and Curt Tipton, both of Camp 1710.

AND THE WINNER IS...

Compatriot Tom Tatum of the Colonel Sherod Hunter Camp 1525 was the First Place winner of the Trivia Contest, and took home the Robert E. Lee Silver Commemorative Coin.

FEDERAL MEMORIAL DAY 1998

PIONEERS' CEMETERY, PHOENIX, ARIZONA

MAY 1998

As in previous years, members of the Colonel Sherod Hunter Camp 1525 took part in the annual Federal Memorial Day ceremony held at Pioneers's Cemetery in Phoenix.  Camp Commander Robert Perkins (at far left) gave the memorial presentation over the grave of the Confederate soldier honoured in that year's ceremony (the cemetery honours one Confederate and one Union soldier during its ceremony each year).  Also pictured, second from right, is George Duckworth of the Arizona Civil War Council, and at far right (with the First National guidon) is Ed Porter, Lt. Commander of the Colonel Sherod Hunter Camp 1525.  The other gentleman (with his back to the camera) is a member of the local Masons' lodge (the ceremony also honours one member of the Masons each year).
