VETERANS DAY CELEBRATION, NOVEMBER 1995

PIONEER ARIZONA LIVING HISTORY MUSEUM, NEW RIVER, ARIZONA

In November 1995 the Colonel Sherod Hunter Camp 1525 attended the annual Veterans Day celebration at the Pioneer Arizona Living History Museum.  The Museum puts on a celebration each year which includes War Between the States encampments and reenactments.  That year several Camp members took part in the reenactment, and the Camp held its November meeting at the event.

CHARGE!

The Confederates charge the Yankee positions during one of the reenactments held over the weekend.  Shown standing at center, next to the cannon, is Camp Commander Robert Perkins, who took part in the reenactment as a Confederate artilleryman.

CAMP MEETING ATTENDEES

Attending the Camp meeting were Compatriot Larry Billar (shown at left with his children), Camp Lt. Commander Ed Porter, Compatriot Tony Eppler, and Camp Commander Robert Perkins.

DRAGOON SPRINGS CLEANUP PROJECT, JUNE 1996

DRAGOON SPRINGS, ARIZONA

In June 1996, the Arizona Division, SCV, in cooperation with a local Boy Scout Troop from Sierra Vista, one of whose Scouts had adopted the project as his Eagle Scout Project, went to the site of the graves of four Confederate soldiers who had been killed in battle with Apaches on 5 May 1862, located near the abandoned Butterfield Overland Stagecoach Station at Dragoon Springs (a few miles south of Interstate Highway 10, about 18 miles east of Benson, Arizona) and cleared away the results 130 years of neglect.  The site had been completely reclaimed by nature, was overgrown by wild grasses, cactus, mesquite and creosote bushes. Indeed, when the workers first arrived, it was not immediately apparent just where the graves were...but after a hard day's work, the site was cleared of the natural growth, and the graves were cleaned up (several large rat's nests being cleared out of the stones which are piled on top of the graves).  Members of Camp 1525, as well as the Confederate Secret Service Camp 1710 of Sierra Vista and the Captain Hunter's Arizona Rangers Camp 1202 of Tucson participated.   Camp 1525 was represented by Commander Robert Perkins and by Lt. Commander Dan Huskisson.  Each year, the Arizona Division returns to maintain the site.

DURING THE CLEANUP

Pictured at center is Camp Secretary Dan Huskisson.  Seen in the background are many of the workers (a lot of them Boy Scouts) as well as the natural growth which, by the time the picture was taken,  had been considerably reduced.

    THE RESULTS OF THE WORK

This picture shows how the area looked after the cleanup...the graves have been cleared of the natural growth and the rat nests which covered them beforehand, and a large area around them had been cleared of growth as well.
